A guide to keyboard controls, recovery and the differences between practice, writing and ranked challenges.

Keyboard and visual controls

Move between controls
Use Tab and Shift + Tab. Press Enter or Space to activate a button. In the header selectors, use arrow keys, Home or End; Enter chooses an option and Escape returns to the selector.
During a typing session
Tab moves to controls. Use Exit for the save / discard choices. In Practice and Learn, Escape pauses. In Write and Challenge, Escape opens the finish / leave choices. Focus returns to the page when the session closes.
English input / IME
Switch to English input while the warning is visible, then choose Resume. Composition text is not a valid transcription keystroke. In Strict Writing and ranked Challenge, deadlines continue; interruption can affect ranking eligibility.
Take your time
Practice offers No time limit, and Learn has no speed requirement. Ranked Challenge and Flow compare fixed conditions. You can rehearse without ranking. Flow offers Stationary targets and Pause; stationary targets still have deadlines.
Zoom, motion and sound
Use your browser zoom. Wide data tables and keyboards may scroll inside their own region. System reduced-motion preferences are respected. Flow sound starts off and is optional.

Where your work is stored

Saving and public visibility are separate choices
ModeStoragePublic by default?
Guest Practice / CheckThis browser. Attaching guest history to an account requires a separate confirmation. No
Signed-in Practice / CheckLocal pending queue, then the account server when confirmed. No
LearnThis browser, separated by user and keyboard layout. Export is available; import is not implemented. No
Write / Custom TextThis browser, even when signed in. Includes drafts and timelines. Export before changing browser or device. No
Challenge / online FlowAccount server after submission. A pending trace remains locally until acknowledged; it may be in your pending Export.No. Separate opt-in is required for the relevant board.
Local FlowThis browser; recent summaries are retained, not unlimited history. No

Account settings exports, Learn exports and Write exports cover different data. There is no universal automatic restore from every export format. A new domain or a cleared browser starts a different local storage area.

When saving or sending fails

Do not clear site data to fix a saving problem. Keep the original tab open and use its Export action first, especially if the warning says “only in this tab”. A success message from the server is different from a result that is still waiting locally.

Retry a completed pending submission under the same account. Do not delete a pending result to unlock another run. A signed-out or expired session must be reauthenticated. Work from a different owner is not silently reassigned.

Autosave cannot guarantee the last keystroke survives a browser crash, power loss or a full disk. Browser private mode may discard storage on closing. A server backup does not contain local-only Learn or Write data.

Choose your first step and see progress

Home → Start here offers an optional keyboard check and self-assessment. It suggests Home Row or the existing two-minute Check. You can skip it or choose the other route; no account or ability test is required. The guide stays in this browser.

Practice → Symbols & Shift practice offers six focused groups with exact microtext previews, no time limit or short timed runs, and links to guided lessons. These are not IELTS Band answers.

Analysis → WPM & accuracy trends separates modes, keyboards, time limits, language profiles and content versions. The exact-value table provides the same information as the graphs. Partial results and records without comparison metadata remain in history but are not used for a trend. A first-to-last change is descriptive, not proof of learning.

Fingerprint currently reports seven observed pattern types. It does not separately align omitted/extra characters or infer modifier-key causes. Learn stores stage completion, first-attempt totals, timing and a resumable place; it does not store separate key/transition diagnostic statistics.

Writing bursts count contiguous stored Writing spans and summarise their durations. They include the configured activity window, not measured thoughts or word counts per burst. When detailed Timeline intervals are truncated, the summary describes only those stored intervals.

Connectivity and measurement limits

There is no Service Worker or full offline install in this release. Load the app and material while connected. Already-open typing sessions run locally, but starting a server run, registering, syncing and reopening uncached pages require a connection.

Writing / Pausing / Editing are event-based estimates, not a direct measurement of thought. WPM, ranks and personal improvement are not IELTS scores or proof of learning. Client-side input can be manipulated even when server calculations are checked.

Accessibility work is ongoing. Automated checks and synthetic input do not replace tests with screen readers, real IMEs and users. This page is not a declaration of full WCAG conformance.

Check this browser

This optional check writes and removes one temporary storage value. It does not read your drafts, email address, cookies or saved learning history, and sends no report to the server.

No check has been run.
